Blythewood Park Debuts Six Brand-New Pickleball Courts

From Coast to Court: The Pickleball Craze Hits Blythewood

(Blythewood, SC) – On Thursday, June 26, Blythewood Park held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of six newly renovated pickleball courts at 126 Boney Road. Once underused tennis courts, the spaces have been transformed into bright blue-and-green pickleball courts, complete with updated fencing and a fresh look for the park.

The shift from tennis to pickleball reflects growing interest in the sport across the country and within the Blythewood community. With tennis court use in decline in recent years, local recreation officials saw an opportunity to meet rising demand by adapting the space. The update is expected to draw significantly more activity and engagement from residents.

What Is Pickleball—and How Does It Differ from Tennis?

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It is played on a smaller court with a perforated plastic ball and solid paddles. The sport features a no-volley zone near the net, commonly referred to as “the kitchen,” and serves must be made underhand.

Unlike tennis, pickleball requires less running and court coverage, making it easier on the joints. The smaller playing area also allows for more social interaction and longer rallies, which adds to its appeal for both beginners and experienced players alike.

A National Surge in Popularity

Pickleball has rapidly grown into one of the most popular sports in the United States. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, nearly 20 million Americans played the sport in 2024, with participation increasing by more than 45% in just one year. Since 2021, the sport has seen growth of over 300%.

The game has proven especially popular among older adults and retirees due to its low-impact nature and community-oriented environment. At the same time, younger adults and families are increasingly picking up the game for both casual and competitive play.

The addition of these courts brings that momentum to Blythewood, offering residents a modern, accessible place to play and gather. With the new facility in place, park staff anticipate increased participation in both organized and drop-in play.
